SPORTS: Boys/Girls Basketball Fall to Nashoba Regional...

Not a good night for Groton-Dunstable HS basketball last Friday with the boys away losing 69-38 and the girls falling at home, 76-47, both to Nashoba.

Chieftains Emmalie Keenan and Emma Duggan each had 15 points while Erin Cressman contributed12 points to lead visiting Nashoba (9-0, 5-0 Mid-Wach B) to the win over the Crusaders (5-5, 2-2).

Junior co-captain Lindsay Werner tallied 16 points, (5 stls, 4 rebs, 3 assists) for Groton-Dunstable. NR led 30-20 at the half but 46 second half points for the No. 2 ranked Chieftains put this one out of reach.

Melyssa Langell and Jenna Plausse scored nine and six points respectively. Everyone I met at the HS in Bolton was pleasurable. Athletic Director Tania Rich greeted me with a big smile. Maybe she knew what lay ahead. It was not a fun evening for the boys.

Nashoba Regional forward Nick Campana (19 pts, 7 rebs) and junior Eric Demmer (12 pts. 4 assists) led the assault. The Chieftains (6-3, 2-2 Midland B) jumped out to a 16-9 lead at the end of one, thanks to Kevin Connelly who cleaned the boards like your mum's vacuum, and freshman Nate Mansour who came off the bench and immediately hit a pair of threes.

Scott Csaplar's (12 pts.) basket and a three by Corey Romich (10 pts.) cut the GD (3-6, 3-2) second stanza deficit to five, 25-20, but Nashoba's 10-4 run extended their lead to 35-24 at the half.

NR junior guard Eric Demmer drained a pair of threes starting the third putting the Crusaders in a 17 point holeand try as he might, Groton-Dunstable coach Greg Gillette could not come up with an answer.

CRUSADERS REBOUND!

After their trouncing at the hands of Nashoba Regional, the resilient Crusaders bounced back with a nail-biting, seat-squirming 48-47 win over visiting Algonguin (5-5). Junior Drew Moore scored a game-high 14 points and point guard Matt (Ice)Tornaritis scored 10 points, including three free throws with time running out in regulation  to help Groton-Dunstable (4-6) hold off the visiting T-Hawks.

Sophomore captain Corey Romich scored 10 points, pulled down six rebounds to go along with three steals. Tornaritis added seven assists and six steals, senior Scott Scaplar(6 pts.) played a strong game while GD freshman Gavin Keough (4 pts.) grabbed nine boards.
