Football Team Stuffs 2-Point Conversion To Hang On and Beat Quabbin 28-27

An outstanding defensive effort from Groton-Dunstable senior Peter Stark and sophomore safety Ben Butler broke up Quabbin's 's two-point pass attempt with time running out allowing the Crusaders (3-0) to hold on for a 28-27 win. GD led 28-13 beginning the fourth quarter but the Panthers made it interesting!

Quabbin (2-1) took a 7-0 on a Dylan Kierman 32 yard TD pass to Justin Coppolino. GD answered with a 55 yard Mack Eberhardt to Coleman Hill TD strike to tie the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Kierman rumbled 56 yards for the Panthers second touchdown in the second quarter but the PAT was blocked. GD took their first lead on an Eberhardt to Drew Moore 70 yard TD pass. Freshmen Corey Romich kicked his second extra point giving the Crusaders a 14-13 advantage at the half.

G-D junior Quintin Forbes ran 60 yards for a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage opening the third and a 13-yard touchdown run by sophomore fullback Joey Orlando late in the third quarter gave the Crusaders a 15 point lead entering the final quarter. Romich kicked both PAT's

But two fourth quarter Panther TD's left the final outcome in doubt until, with 1:24 remaining, Stark and Butler halted the Panthers frenzied comeback.

Mack Eberhardt rushed 15 times for 94 yards, completed four of 12 passes for 164 yards and two touchdowns. Romich's 4-for-4 night on extra points was huge for GD. Forbes gained 92 yards on seven carries. On the defensive side, Forbes, Moore and Butler each had an interception while linebacker Alex Dhionis had two sacks. The Crusaders will host Westford Academy on Saturday, 9/29 at 11 a.m.
