Crusaders Down Lunenburg Setting Up Big Thanksgiving Day Showdown with Tyngsboro

Groton-Dunstable (9-1) goes into, what we shall call it, a bye week after a convincing 34-12 triumph over Lunenburg (4-6) in a Division 3 football game. Junior quarterback Mack Eberhardt was impressive, passing for 162 yards and three touchdowns and gaining 102 yards and two more scores.

Offensively, the Crusaders amassed 323 yards to the Knights' 152 and look ready for their showdown with Tyngsborough (10-0) for Mid-Wach C league honors on Thanksgiving morning. ((10 a.m. at GDRHS).

Both teams were scoreless after the first quarter, but Eberhardt's 62-yard TD run changed that. The talented, hard-running QB swept down the side line, broke it to the middle, outrunning the Lunenburg defense into the end zone. (PAT by Corey Romich).

Lunenburg was forced to punt on its next series, but Eberhardt was sacked by Greg Abare, knocking the ball loose and the Knights recovered at the Crusader 31. Abare scored the first of his two touchdowns but the PAT was missed giving GD a one-point lead with less than two minutes remaining in the half.

Time for GD! With 42 seconds remaining in the second quarter, Eberhardt connected with tight end Alex Dhionis for 24 yards. With seconds left, a 19 yard pass completion to junior Quintin Forbes for the TD gave the Crusaders a 13-6 (Romich kick) lead at the half.

Eberhardt's TD (Romich kick) from two yards in the third was set up by a Matt Manning's 16 yard run and the Crusaders had a 20-6 advantage and some breathing room.

Lunenburg closed to trail 20-12 on Abare's second TD in the third stanza but touchdown passes from Eberhardt (Romich kick) to Drew Moore (65 yards) and to Forbes (21 yards) in the fourth (Romich kick), with 1:43 remaining, secured the win.

On Thanksgiving morn, GD will face undefeated Tyngsborough (10-0-0) featuring running back Chuck Keenan (1,315 yards and 20 touchdowns). Mack Eberhardt (968 yards) and Matt Manning (610 yards) have scored 12 and nine TDs respectively for the Crusaders.Receivers Quintin Forbes, 12 receptions for 279 yards (3 TDs), Drew Moore, 3 for 120 yards, two TDs and Coleman Hill, 3 for 96 yds and a TD give Eberhardt multiple options. Tigers QB Jack Trottier;is 19 for 27, 294 yards and six TD has a talented receiver in Tom Lafferty (12 recptions, 180 yards and 4 TDs). Winner will take Colonial Cup and league title!
