TOWN ELECTIONS: 4 Seek 2 Positions For Selectmen; Contested Races for Water Commission, School Committee & Light Commission
Four candidates will be seeking election to the two open seats open for election on the Board of Selectmen including the two incumbents currently holding the positions. All four candidates have returned their nomination papers and all four will appear on the ballot at town elections on May 20.
With the close of the nomination period on April 1, five positions on four different boards will be contested at town elections. The four boards where contests will be decided include the Board of Selectmen, School Committee, Light Commission and Water Commission.
The race for the two positions open for election on the Board of Selectmen will highlight the ballot as two incumbents will be challenged by two other candidates. Incumbents Peter Cunningham and Anna Eliot will be seeking reelection to their respective positions. They will be challenged by Barry Pease and Shane Grant. With four candidates seeking election to two positions, the two candidates receiving the highest vote totals win election.
There is one seat open for election on the Groton-Dunstable School Committee and two candidates will be seeking election to that position. Incumbent Jon Sjoberg is not seeking reelection and two candidates-- Jeffrey Kubick and Brian LeBlanc--will face each other to determine who will replace Sjoberg. Gina Cronin who took out nomination papers early in the process did not return her papers and will not appear on the ballot at town elections.
Two other major boards will also be contested at town elections: one position on the Electric Light Commission and one position on the Water Commission.
On the Light Commission, incumbent Chris Cristie will not seek reelection to his position. Seeking his seat on the Light Commission are candidates Bruce Easom and Olin Lathrop.
The one seat open for election on the Water Commission will draw some controversy as Josh Degen, a sitting member on the Board of Selectmen, will be seeking election to the Water Commission. The current incumbent, James Gmeiner, is seeking reelection to his seat on the Commission.
Town Elections are part of the Town Meeting process and follows the Annual Town Meeting which is on April 28; Town Elections are scheduled for May 20.
