NEWS: Suffering Cardiac Arrest, 78-Year-Old Resident Revived by Police & EMTs
Groton Police and EMTs responded to an emergency medical call Sunday, April 6, where a 78-year-old resident suffered cardiac arrest and fell 10 feet from a ladder. He wife broke his fall and began CPR.
Groton Police were the first to arrive on the scene and immediately began defibrillation. Sergeant Derrick Gemos and Officers Rachael Mead and Kathy Newell applied their AED and administered multiple shocks. EMTs arrived on scene and took over CPR. EMTs who responded from Groton included Lieutenant Michael Culley and EMTs Heather Emslie, Betsey Reeves, Cathy Lincoln, Rob VanSchalkwyk and Mark Imbimbo.
An ALS unit from the Ayer Fire Department also responded and included Paramedic Tim Shea and EMT Frank Fowler. Prior to beginning transport to the hospital the crew determined the patient had regained a pulse and was breathing. The patient was transported to Nashoba Valley Medical Center and transferred to Mass General by helicopter.
Groton Fire Department Captain Susan Daly credited the quick response from his wife, early defibrillation from Groton Police Officers and excellent CPR by the EMT's along with the teamwork and training as instrumental in saving this resident's life.
