NEWS: Steele McCurdy Is New Chief of Groton Fire Department

After Robert Hart turned down Selectmen's offer to become Fire chief late Thursday afternoon [see story opposite column], Selectmen convened an emergency meeting Friday morning 9:00 AM at Town Hall to discuss how to respond to the surprising turn of events.

But, it turned out to be an easy, straight forward decision because runner-up Littleton Deputy Chief Steele McCurdy and finalist Robert Hart were almost evenly matched with only a slight preference for Hart. Josh Degen said he had contacted McCurdy who said he was still interested in the job and would seriously consider an offer.

Selectmen voted unanimously to extend an offer to McCurdy pending successful salary negotiations and background check. An offer was made Friday afternoon with McCurdy reviewing the offer over the weekend. On Monday morning he met with Selectman Chairman Josh Degen and Town Manager Mark Haddad to negotiate final details. Mr. McCurdy accepted the offer of a three-year contract with annual compensation of almost $99,000 that same afternoon.

At their Monday meeting, Selectmen ratified the McCurdy contract with four members voting for ratification and Selectman Anna Eliot abstaining. It was noted that one advantage of McCurdy's taking the job was his experience in a combination fire department, a department including both full-time and call fire fighters. Robert Hart's experience was in a full-time department with no call members.
