NEWS: Selectmen Reverse Decision Allowing Town Employees Use of Fire Dept. Exercise Room

Members of Groton Fire Department appeared before Selectmen, objecting to a decision by Town Manager Mark Haddad allowing town employees to use exercise equipment in the new Fire Station from noon to 2 p.m. weekdays. When questioned, Haddad argued that it 'made sense' for town employees to have 'limited access' to the exercise equipment during these hours.

Selectman Anna Eliot questioned the wisdom of such a policy, saying that the exercise area is located in a sensitive part of the fire station near locker rooms containing equipment and personal property. She added that physical fitness was part of firefighters job description and that they should be free to use the equipment whenever available, without competing with town employees.

Stuart Schulman said that if the town were not in an interim period between fire chiefs, this would never have come before Selectmen. He added, "I suggest we wait until the new Chief is on board to make a decision."

Haddad argued, "We're only talking about a limited time for use of the exercise equipment [by town employees]. I think it would be nice to let them [town employees] use the equipment."

Selectmen overruled Haddad's decision and decided that the new chief would determine policy regarding use of the exercise equipment. In the meantime, the equipment will be for exclusive use of the firefighters.
