K-9 Unit Foils Robbery of BMW, Cash & Valuables in Littleton

In addition to saving the life of an injured woman in Tyngsborough and assisting at the Boston Marathon bombing investigation, Groton Police Department's K-9 unit was recently instrumental in foiling the robbery of cash, valuables and a BMW from a Littleton Whitcomb Street home.

On August 16 Littleton Police called upon Groton's K-9 unit to assist tracking three men reported by a neighbor of suspicious activity in the Littleton neighborhood. Groton Police Officer Nick Beltz and his canine partner, 'Officer Lola', tracked the three suspects to a house on King Street. Two of the men were arrested at the scene while one of them fled the scene and was apprehended by officers a short time later.

The three suspects - all teenagers, one age 16 and two age 17 - allegedly stole a large amount of cash and valuables from the home, having broken in Sunday and spending the night there while the owners were away. The following morning, the perpetrators allegedly loaded the valuables and cash into a BMW in the driveway. But, apparently being unable to hotwire the vehicle, fled on foot when their suspicious activity was noted by a neighbor and reported to police. Although the three suspects were teenagers, the Lowell Sun described the apprehended suspects as 'allegedly members of a violent, national street gang.'

All three men were scheduled to be arraigned in Lowell Juvenile Court.
