Groton Police Sgt. Goodwin Med-Flighted to Mass. General Hospital After Crash

Early Wednesday morning traffic was rerouted around Main Street, giving medical personnel access to transport Groton Police Sargent Jason Goodwin to Mass General Hospital via Med Flight helicopter after he suffered serious chest injuries when his cruiser crashed while pursuing a vehicle traveling at high speed through Groton Center toward Littleton.

According to Selectman Josh Degen, the accident happened around 1 a.m. when the cruiser lost control while pursuing the speeder, snapping a telephone pole in front of Lawrence Academy.

Degen said that the cruiser was heading west in front of the Town Hall when Sgt. Goodwin observed a speeding vehicle traveling in the opposite direction toward Littleton. He turned around to pursue the speeder, and something caused him to veer off the road and hit the utility pole sideways.

Degen said the speeding vehicle got away as Sgt. Goodwin did not have a chance to get a registration number. He also said that Sgt. Goodwin was alert at the scene.

A member of the Groton Police Force for 15 years, Sgt. Goodwin serves the night shift commander.

The accident is currently under investigation.
