GLA Donates $5,000 For Sargisson Beach Restoration; Selectmen Establish Gift Account for Donations; Town Meeting Support Sought [with video]

Three weeks ago the Groton Lakes Association (GLA) members voted to donate $5,000 to the Sargisson Beach Committee to help fund the restoration of Sargisson Beach. "We are making this gift so that sometime in the near future Sargisson Beach will be open once again to all the residents of Groton for swimming and recreation. Sargisson Beach is not the Knops Pond Beach or the Lost Lake Beach - it is the public beach for the residents of the Town of Groton. It is the "people's beach" and is the only place in Groton where all residents' of Groton can go to swim for free.

We hope that residents of Groton will attend the Town Meeting on April 28th and vote in support of Community Preservation Funding of Article 18 Proposal D that partially funds the restoration of Sargisson Beach. I personally hope that others in the Groton Community will step up and donate additional funds to this great effort. I am sure Mark Haddad will be able to figure out a way to accept additional funds on behalf of the Sargisson Beach Committee."

Prest said that "The Groton Lakes Association is making this gift in memory of Steve Marranzini who passed away 10 days ago at the age of 47.

Steve was the treasurer of the GLA for years and a member of the lake community who knew more about the lakes than the rest of us combined. Steve was always there to help when help was needed. He was the cornerstone of the GLA and he remained as treasurer as other GLA board members came and went - he was the glue that held the GLA together when members became discouraged about the fate of their efforts. We will all miss him."

Prest was joined in his presentation to the Board by Steve Marranzini's wife Cory. He pointed out that "Unfortunately Andrew Davis who is the heart and soul of the Sargisson Beach Committee, and Cheney Harper, who lives on Lost Lake, could not be here this evening but we do have other members of the committee here to accept the gift including John Giger, Josh Degen and Rena Swezey."

Following Prest's presentation, the Board of Selectmen voted to establish a gift account to accept donations that are earmarked for Sargisson Beach.
