Obama = FDR III

Dear Editor:

There's an old cartoon about a couple of Indians somewhere in the American West sending smoke signals when an atom bomb test happens miles away, complete with huge mushroom cloud.  One Indian turns to the other and says, "I wish I'd said that."

Michael J. Cahill pretty much said it all in his recent reply - Obama = FDR II - to Emil Rechsteiner's letter headlined: Obama = FDR on (among other things) Franklin Delano Roosevelt and "global warming."  I wish I'd said that...

There is one point that Mr. Cahill missed, though.  It's the one point that shows that Obama really does equal FDR.  Both Democratic, Socialist/Progressive Presidents inherited a recession or depression and through their actions, made it worse.

As for Liberalism/Progressivism/Socialism, these interwoven political philosophies - and systems -have some serious structural flaws.  The first is that they do not take account of human nature, and therefore wind up forcing people to do things that they might, of their own free will, not do.  The forcing is often literally that - the force of the law, law enforcement agencies and government bureaucracies is brought to bear on the citizenry, with the resultant loss of their freedoms.

The second, as Margaret Thatcher and others have pointed out, is that eventually you run out of other people's money.  Liberalism/Progressivism/Socialism are redistributive political systems, and what is redistributed is the taxpayer's dollars.  Eventually, the necessary levels of taxation (or in the case of the Obama administration, government borrowing) become too high for the productive people to bear, and you have a revolt.  If you are lucky, the revolt will be at the ballot box, although today, to quote George Wallace, "There ain't a dime's worth of difference between the two parties."  If that was perceived to be the case back in the 1960s/1970s, it's certainly even truer today.  So perhaps the revolt will be a bit more demonstrative, possibly even violent.  The ball is in Mr. Obama's court...

Sincerely yours,

Brooks Lyman
