Joseph J. Hutta
Joseph J. Hutta, former Groton resident and husband of the late Agnes Hutta, died Wednesday, February 8, 2023 after a long decline from dementia and a short battle with Covid. He was 96.
Joe was born on February 26, 1926 in Lansford, PA. During the Second World War, he served in the US Army Air Corps. In 1951 he and Agnes wed, and they were married for nearly 58 years.
Joe earned his BS, MS and PhD degrees at Penn State from the College of Mineral Sciences. He worked as a research physical scientist, growing crystals and making glass, before retiring in 1996.
In 1972 the family relocated to Groton, enjoying a move to the country from suburban New Jersey. Agnes and Joe lived in Groton for the next four decades, planting large vegetable gardens, harvesting raspberries, raising chickens, tending their orchard and making wine. Joe leaves behind four daughters, Louise, Ellen, Jane and Jessica, and seven grandchildren who will miss him.
