Irene Janet Torgersen (McAdie)

Irene Janet Torgersen (McAdie), age 84, and a resident of Ayer/Groton, passed away on Monday, February 6, 2023 surrounded by her loved ones.

Janet was born in Brooklyn, NY on January 5, 1939 to her parents William and Irene (Whalen) McAdie, just hours before her husband Donald Torgersen was born. Janet attended St. Agnes Schools in Rockville Center, NY. She was a Cradle Catholic and could still name most of her teachers (nuns) in school. Before getting married, Janet worked her way up from the small businesses of Long Island to Morgan Stanley on Wall Street.

Janet was a passionately giving person who was committed to helping the disadvantaged. Countless hours were spent in soup kitchens, helping the homeless and working with retired nuns. While living in Pinehurst, NC she founded a program called “Good Samaritan Weekend” with the purpose of gathering food for those living in a nearby town who were in need. The program was so successful they needed to build storage space to hold the food for distribution. The program has grown, expanded in content and is still a major part of the neighboring communities charitable activities.

Janet is predeceased by her parents William and Irene (Whalen) McAdie and her twin brother Bruce. She is survived by her husband for 62 years, Donald Torgersen of Ayer/Groton and her six children: Donald II, Douglas, Deanna Mary, Dean, Denise and Daniel, 24 grandchildren and four great grandchildren.
