VISUAL Introduction to the Geometry of Nature
The geometry of nature is very different from the geometry we all learned in school. As Benoit Mandelbrot observed, "Clouds are not spheres, mountains are not cones, coastlines are not circles, and bark is not smooth, nor does lightning travel in a straight line." Mandelbrot and many other mathematicians have developed a new field of geometry, fractals, that allows discussion about the twisted, gnarly natural objects that surround us.
Thursday, May 21, 7 p.m. Nashua River Watershed Association will present "A Visual Introduction to the Geometry of Nature" with guest presenter Jonathan Choate.
The program will take place at NRWA's River Resource Center, 592 Main Street (Rt. 119), Groton. Jon is a mathematics instructor at Groton School and was a co-principal investigator for the National Science Foundation's "Fractals and Chaos" project.
