Firemen's Muster, Annual Boy Scout Yard Sale, and Chicken Dinner!
Firemen's Muster
On Labor Day Sept. 7, the annual Firemen's Muster will be held in Groton. This tradition is being upheld by members of Groton's Fire Dept. to bring people a 'Small Town America' day. The word 'Muster' means "to assemble, especially for inspection." Families line the street in West Groton to view the fire trucks, old and new from far and wide to show off, and possibly take home a trophy for 'newest, oldest, or the one that comes from the furthest distance'.
Even the barbequed chicken is a tradition; an old family recipe makes up the special seasoning that is put on the chickens prior to being grilled; Corn on the cob, rolls are rest of menu items for the chicken lunch. There will be hamburgers, hotdogs, and sausages offered; and the ladies of one of the churches will sell strawberry shortcakes.
Enjoy firefighter games, Boy Scout Yard Sale, the chance for youngsters to point a fire hose at a 'burning' building, climb on many of the trucks, and the comradery, meeting new people and seeing 'old' ones.
