Bringing Boutwell House Back to the Future, Thanks to Groton History Center

George Boutwell came to Groton in 1835 at the age of 17 where he worked a Henry Woods’ store on Main Street. Woods eventually made him a partner and The continued to work in the store even after Woods’ death in 1841. In 1851 he was first elected to two terms as governor of Massachusetts. In 1862 President Abraham Lincoln appointed him the first commissioner of internal revenue, and in 1869 President Ulysses Grant named him Secretary of the Treasury. -Photo and cutline from Groton Historical Society’s publication, Images of America, Groton.
