Obituary

Clyde Boyer “Russ” Long III

Russ lived his whole life in Massachusetts, starting with his birth on December 1, 1942 in Houghs Neck, Quincy. He graduated from Lincoln-Sudbury High School and attended UMass Amherst before transferring. He earned his BS from UMass Boston and later an MBA from Rivier College in Nashua.

After a few years working for Dun & Bradstreet in Boston, he managed the Nashoba Valley Olympia in Boxborough for about 30 years, overseeing the construction of a second and third rink there and running successful hockey and figure skating programs for children and adults.

In adulthood, he moved progressively west, living for a number of years in Sudbury, Littleton and Acton, then 30 years in Groton, 20 in a Main St. Victorian and 10 in a colonial on Chicopee Row, He and his wife lovingly restored both; the colonial was his favorite of all. His last 20 years were lived in Royalston.

Russ loved music of all kinds and many dogs over the years, and he enjoyed skiing, golfing, vegetable gardening, traveling, camping, boating and fishing. He was an avid hockey player, participating in adult leagues at both Nashoba Valley and later in Worcester with the Rusty Blades, a league for those over 45.

He is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Christine Beckert Long; his daughter Jennifer Long, and her husband and son Wayne and James Blean of West Suffield, CT. He died Friday, September 27, 2024 at Athol Hospital.
