Library Roof Project Closes in on Completion

Substantial completion of the library roof project took place Friday, January 24, 2020 when the "cherry on top" was installed - the beautifully replicated skylight - shown here in the photo sequence. Look for the glint of the newly-installed skylight peeking above the roofline of the original 1893 library building as you walk or drive by.

Nashoba Valley Region Is Hotbed For Climate Protest

The most recent train blockade occurred on Jan. 2 in Harvard. Protesters erected a scaffolding structure over the rail track in Harvard near Depot Rd. around 10:30 p.m. [See photo above] The protesters alerted the railroad that a blockade had been erected. With that notice, the train stopped some distance from the blockade. Four people were arrested and had to appear in Clinton District Court.

The region surrounding Groton has recently become a hotbed of climate activism as protesters from local, grass-roots organizations have blocked coal trains traveling through the rail- hub in Ayer to deliver tons of coal to a coal-fired electric generation plant in Bow, NH.

Senior Center Comes In $40K Under Budget After Final Accounting

Town Manager Mark Haddad told the Select Board that the final accounting for the design and construction costs of the Senior Center in West Groton is completed and that he was pleased to announce that it came in under budget costing $40,000 below what Town Meeting had appropriated for the project.

Property Tax Exemptions Are Carefully Tailored To Aid Less Fortuante Residents

Groton’s Principal Assessor Jonathan Greeno updated the Select Board on the several vehicles available for eligible residents to apply for an exemption to reduce their property taxes. Greeno stressed that an applicant for any one of these exemptions can receive only one, but would be eligible for additional funds under the Senior Abatement Form.

Automatic Voter Registration Is Underway In Bay State

As of January 1st, Massachusetts citizens who are not registered to vote will be automatically be registered when they apply for or renew their driver’s license or state identification cards at the Registry of Motor Vehicles, apply for MassHealth or sign up for health insurance through the Commonwealth Health Connecter. Citizens will have the ability to opt out of registering to vote when they are completing their applications.
