Expansion of Selectman Degen's comments on Fire Department Staffing

Below is an expansion of statements made by Selectmen Josh Degen when addressing the Fire Department Staffing Update and the work of the committee that looked into the issues.

At the Monday, Jan 27, 2014 Board of Selectman's meeting, Selectman Josh Degen reported on the three meetings that were held recently to discuss the Fire Department Staffing issues.

CALL FIREFIGHTERS: Crucial to Town; Taxpayers Can't Afford Full-time Department [with video]

Selectman Chairman Peter Cunningham told the members of the Groton Fire Department Monday night that the town "cannot afford a fulltime fire department" and emphasized the importance of the safety and protection provided to the town by the Fire Department's "call department" members who are often toned out in the middle of the night to serve the community and its residents, whether for a fire or medical emergencies.

EDITORIAL: We Are All Complicit in Schools Budget Crisis

It's an uncomfortable fact: we are all complicit in the budget crisis at Groton-Dunstable Regional School District. In order to find a durable solution to the budget shortfall we need to do two things: one, take a careful look at costs, and cut where reasonable, and two, understand and accept the town's part in bringing about this crisis.

NEWS: Process To Replace Fire Chief Begins [with video]

The Lost Lake Fire Station Community Room was crowded Monday night with call department members and full-time firefighters to provide input and suggestions to the Town Manager and Board of Selectmen on the process that will be used to replace Chief Joe Bosselait who is retiring from the Fire Department in June after having served in that capacity for fourteen years.

Ski Teams In First Season Race

Groton Dunstable Regional High School first downhill ski race of the season in the Mass Bay West Alpine Ski Race League, Alpha Division Jan. 7 at Nashoba Valley Ski area. Format was Grand slalom. The league consists of Lowell, Chelmsford, Newton South, Belmont, G-D, Harvard/Bromfield, Westford, Acton-Boxboro.


SPORTS: Crusaders Sweep Quabbin

G-D came from behind to defeat visiting Quabbin, 56-43 in a Midland B Friday night match-up. Crusaders were led by Corey Romich (11 pts.), Matt Tornaritis (10 pts.) and Cedric Wirta (10 pts.).  

Panthers (7-4, 3-3), with payback in mind after losing to G-D earlier in the season jumped out to a 10-4 lead.
