SPORTS: Crusaders Trump Quabbin

Groton-Dunstable (5-5-2, 3-3) senior Dan McGuiness scored twice leading the Crusaders to an impressive 5-1 win over host Quabbin (6-5-2, 1-4) in a Midland B soccer match. Nick Fordham, Dean Tornaritis and Pat Keating had single goals for the Crusaders.

Crusader freshman Dean Tornaritis set the tone early when he received a through ball from senior Dan McGuinness, broke through the defense and finished, beating Panther keeper Jake Leparle to the far corner.

Minutes later, sophomore Matt Kikorian received a deflection off a header from classmate Gabe Dingle and finished for the 2-0 lead. Freshman Pat Keating started the play with a throw in and Dingle and Kikorian did the rest.

The Panthers responded at 16:20 off a direct kick that was redirected by Cameron Fletcher (Riley Beaupre) past GD keeper Connor McGuire.

Senior Nick Fordham made it 3-1 when he broke in from the left side and finished low to the far post.

In the sixth minute of the second half, McGuinness (Brogan Walsh) picked up a loose ball that Quabbin keeper Leparle misplayed and finished into the empty net.

Less than a minute later GD was rewarded a penalty kick when Kikorian was taken down in the box. McGuinness obliged, converting the PK, to give GD a 5-1 lead.

The Crusaders received solid play from Ryan Hardy, Tyler Belanger, Matt Straw and Anthony Resca.

Shots favored GD 10-4; corner kicks GD 2-0; and fouls GD 9-7.

GD defeated Hudson 2-0. Dan McGuinness and Matt Straw scored to lead the No. 10 Crusaders (6-5-2, 4-3 Midland B) past the visiting Hawks (6-4-1, 2-3-1).
