The start to the winter high school sports season is going to be delayed by at least a couple of weeks in Central Mass.
The Massachusetts Inter- scholastic Association’s Board of Directors last week approved a winter season that would run from Nov. 30 to Feb. 21. Coincidentally, the start date is the traditional first Monday after Thanksgiving while the end date is three weeks earlier than usual as MIAA-sponsored regional and state tournaments have been canceled.
But as was the case in the fall, leagues and districts have the flexibility to delay the start if they so choose. That will be the case for CMass as both districts jointly agreed earlier this week to start the season no earlier than Dec. 14.
Not knowing what families are going to do over Thanksgiving, whether they’re traveling or not and then are kids now quarantin- ing, it was decided that the extra two weeks to give a buffer that would help schools straighten out that information and then no one is missing out.
District 2 is comprised on the Colonial Athletic League, Dual Valley Conference, Inter-High, and Southern Worcester County League along with former mem- bers of the Central Mass. Con- ference. District 3 is made up of the Mid-Wach League and Worcester Country Athletic Conference.
In a joint agreement it was decided that Nov. 30 was too soon, especially with the holidays and everything going on. It was ap- propriate to extend the time to absorb all the EEA regulations and all that information going forward. Information From MIAA .
