The MIAA TMC Recommends Canceling MIAA-Sponsored Winter Sports Tournaments

The Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association Tournament Management Com- mittee is charged with managing tournaments for high school sports across the state.
On Wednesday, October 21, the TMC voted, 15-0, to recommend to the Board of Governors that MIAA-sponsored tournaments be canceled for the winter season, which is scheduled to run from Nov. 30 to Feb. 22.
Each of the MIAA’s nine districts were tasked earlier this fall with seeking input from their member schools about what di- rection to take with regard to the winter season.
Support was overwhelmingly in favor of canceling postseason tournaments while attempting to replicate a locally controlled format that has worked well thus far this fall. That is, shortened schedules with schools placed in geographic pods to reduce travel.
The MIAA expects guidance from the state by early November that will determine the status of a regular season for winter sports. A subcommittee will meet weekly to address the chal- lenges for the possibility of a winter season.
With the Reggie Lewis Center and many other indoor track facilities unavailable until at least January, the MIAA Cross Country & Track committee supports recommendation to the COVID Task Force and Board of Directors to move Indoor TF to Fall II season, if health metrics are safe, competition takes place indoors, or the option to move outside for competition.
