MIAA Announces 2014 Leadership Training Institute Graduates; among Them is GDRHS Physical Education/Health Teacher

Mass. Interscholastic Athletic Association announced that 27 education professionals from Mass.and Rhode Island recently graduated from the 27th Annual MIAA Leadership Training Institute. Among the graduates was Reilly Hutchinson ‐ Physical Education/Health Teacher at Groton‐Dunstable Regional High School.

This five‐day residential program (Jan. 27‐31, 2014) was facilitated and directed by MIAA Educational Athletics Staff and featured national trainers, Kevin Ringhofer and Marty Harding.

"It was a ton of work," remembers Hutchinson. "We were at it at 8:00 in the morning 'til 9:30 every night."

Leadership trainees learned practical strategies for working with coaches, students and parents to promote the five "pillars" of MIAA Educational Athletics - wellness, sportsmanship, leadership, coaches' education and community service. Specific course topics included pre‐season meetings, drug and alcohol policies, setting a positive example and responding to problems.

"I had a chance to collaborate with coaches, athletic directors and educators in similar positions as myself. Without a doubt, the best conference I have attended."

"I would not have been able to go to this wonderful event had it not been for my colleagues support," commented Hutchinson. "They gave up their personal time all week to tend to my classes.  I am so grateful to them for their willingness to be flexible and also to the high school administration for their support."

Expenses for this week‐long workshop were paid for by MIAA including training materials, meals, hotel accommodations and professional development. Participants attended sessions at the MIAA Office in Franklin and Holiday Inn Express in Milford. 2014 graduates join an alumni base of more than 700 participants who have participated in this program.
