Groton’s Joseph Simeone is among the top prospects in the Bay State for Major League Baseball’s amateur draft scheduled for June 10-11. Quite an accomplishment for this athlete!
Joseph graduated from Groton-Dunstable, Class of 2017, and is a junior at the University of Connecticut. He is the son of Ann and Robert Simeone.
UConn was on a five game win streak and owned an 8-5 re- cord when the 2020 season ended on March 12 due to the Coronavirus. Joe started 4 games and posted a 1-1 record with a 3.0 ERA at that point. He was second among pitchers with 23 strikeouts.
Joe was the Opening Day pitcher for the Huskies’ 2020 season which began on February 14 against Cal Poly in Scottsdale AZ. Despite a 5-0 loss, starting pitcher Simeone was strong for the Huskies, pitching four solid innings, allowing three hits with 6Ks.
One of Joe’s best games was against University of New Orleans on February 29. He started the ballgame for the Huskies, pitched a career-high 4.1 innings, allowing three hits, one run with four strikeouts. During his freshman season at UConn, Joe saw action in 15 games and started two on the mound. He pitched a career-high 4.0 innings and earned his first career win in a game against Sacred Heart on May 8, 2018.
While at Groton-Dunstable, Joe lettered four seasons under head coach Matt LeBlanc and was named 2017 Pre-season All-State Third Team member. Joe recorded the final two outs to clinch the 2016 Division III Baseball State Championship for the undefeated Crusaders.
