Lady Crusaders Stun Top-Ranked Westborough PHOTO

Groton-Dunstable's Ariana Lacombe and Dani Kenney scored in the first half and the Crusaders held on to take a 2-1 win over visiting Westborough (7-3-2, 5-1-1). For the first place Rangers, who entered the game with four of the top seven scorers in Midland B, it was their first league loss.

The Crusaders (7-7-1, 4-2-1 Midland League B) won this hard fought battle with outstanding defense and a Wonder Woman effort from keeper Kaiyln Rekos who had 13 saves.

GD got off on the right foot (no pun intended) at 8:12 of the first half when Ariana Lacombe recieved a cross from Lindsay Werner and chipped it into the Westborough goal.

Moments later, GD's Jen Johnson had a break away and seemingly put the ball in the back of the net but the goal was called back by the officials, who unfortunately, seemed a bit out of position and were unable to determine if the ball crossed the goal line.

At 28:22, senior captain Dani Kenney struck a shot from 25 yards out that just snuck underneath the crossbar for GD's second goal.

Both teams played even for the rest of the game. However, it was the Crusaders back line, Meg Freiter and Marianna Murphy in the middle along with Brianna Considine and Bethany Fordham limiting quality Westborough shots.

"The real hero of the game was Kailyn Rekos who played an incredible game making full stretch saves and coming out of the goal to challenge point blank shots, making a total of 12 saves. She was in goal for the entire game and made several world class stops," gushed girls varsity soccer coach
