All schools that were a Unified Champion Schools including Groton Dunstable Regional HS for the 2018-2019 school year, received two posters from Special Olympics. Schools were asked to submit photos with their posters.
The top three entrees were selected and posted on social media and our followers were asked to vote for the winner who would then receive a fun pep rally kit customized to their school.
The response was overwhelming from students, family members, and community members. More people than ever before were visiting our webpage, commenting, sharing, inquiring, posting, tweeting, and re-tweeting about Unified Champion Schools.
For all of this excitement and interest we THANK YOU. We are always trying to reach more people to explain about the good work and inclusion happening in our schools and communities.
We were thoroughly impressed by the support for all three finalists and how the communities rallied around these Unified teams. Due to some technical challenges with the poll, and the incredible effort by all three schools, all finalists received pep rally kits.
“Unified Sports is a program that allows students with disabilities to get involved in sports as well as interact with students who do not have a disability. Unified Sports in schools, high schools, middle schools, or elementary schools is the kind of program that can make a student with a disability feel included, spread awareness, and help change the life of any athlete that participates on the program.” (Catherine Twing, Auburn HS alumna)
There are over 150 Unified Champion Schools in Massachusetts. These schools are committed to offering Unified Sports, Inclusive Youth Leadership and Whole School Engagement for all students.
In August 2018, Groton-Dunstable RHS was among 10 Massachusetts schools that were recognized as a National Banner School. These 10 schools were recognized among 131 total schools nationally as Unified Champion Schools which have gone above and beyond in the aforementioned categories. They received a banner which hangs proudly the high school, indicating to everyone that GDRHS is a school that prioritizes inclusion and respect!
