GD Volleyball Proves to Be Too Much For Leominster

The Groton-Dunstable Girls Volleyball team made easy work of Leominster on Friday, defeating their rivals by a score of 3-1 in the best of five game. It was a fairly easy for the Crusaders, with all three of the wins being well-fought and well-earned.

Before the game, looking at the two teams practicing, it was easy to tell what team would come out victorious. The Blue Devils were making several mistakes, and the way they practiced was the way they played. The Crusaders came out kicking, scoring 21 points on Leominster in no time at all, advancing to second set.

It looked as if the Crusaders were going to sweep the Blue Devils in the beginning of the second set, playing just as dominant as they were in the first. But towards the end of the second set, Leominster started to wake up. They were able to score a string of points on GD, but not quick enough as the home team took the second set as well.

By this time, GD was starting to withdraw most of their starters, and Leominster took the opportunity to claim the third set. It was all Leominster had, and even then it was a close contest, with Leominster winning the set 21-18, and eliminating the chance of a sweep.

Leominster's win alerted the Crusaders, and they began to put back in their starters. The Blue Devils put up a good fight in the fourth set, but GD overpowered them and won their third set, meaning they take the match.

With the win, the Crusaders volleyball team qualified for districts, improving to an 8-6 overall record. After the game, varsity coach Lisa Lapierre said "We played strong, we played a good game defensively and overall we stayed with it. The team never let up and tried to play hard every set, every point and it was just a good win."

Senior setter Rose O'Malley, senior outside hitter Laura Bieren, junior middle hitter Caitlyn Trout, junior middle hitter Alexa Stathis, sophomore outside hitter Brecken Gingras-Jodice and freshman middle hitter Lydia Pray all played strong games for GD.
