HOCKEY

GD 7, Wayland 4 

Brendan Ferrari had three goals and an assist as Groton-Dunstable (10-8-1) qualified for the postseason with the decision over Wayland. 

Ryan Cox (assists: Aidan Flood, Will Zinkann), Brendan Ferrari (assists: Deaglan Garside, Ben Rivet) and Will Zinkan (assists: Brendan Ferrari, Cory Hannemann) all tallied goals in the first period. Ferrari scored two goals in the middle period within 40 seconds of each other. Assists on the goals were Deaglan Garside, Ben Rivet and Nate Glencross, Hunter Woolfrey. In the third, Nate Glencross scored with helpers from Jake Figueroa, Hunter Woolfrey.  Alex Cianci also tallied a goal (assists: Cam Hardy, Hunter Woolfrey). Aidan Ferrara made 22 stops in goal.

GD 6, Auburn 3

In the deciding third period, Jake Figueroa scored three goals, leading the Crusaders (11-8-1) past host Auburn (11-8-1). Nate Glengross (goal, assist). Cam Hardy (assists: Alex Cianci, Hunter Woolfrey) scored at 3:56 of the first. Rockets’ Ryan Lempicki tied the score late in the first.

With Auburn ahead 2-1 in the middle period, Ryan Cox (assists: Alex Cianci, Hunter Woolfrey) scored for GD sending the teams into the third stanza knotted 2-2.  

Figueroa (assist: Nate Glencross) scored early in the third, Nate Glencross made it 4-2 with a helper from Brendan Ferrari and GD had some breathing room. Jake Figueroa (assists: Ben Rivet, Hunter Woolfrey) upped the advantage to 5-2 at 11:49 and the senior forward completed his hat trick with an empty netter, assists from T.J. Sannazzaro, Hunter Woolfrey. Ryan Mosscrop made 15 saves for GD while Collin Winkelmann had 19 stops for Auburn. In the last two games, the “assist machine,” Crusader Hunter Woolfrey, dished out seven assists!

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Mary’s (Lynn) Spartan Classic

Div. 2 Semifinal: 

GD 57, Wilmington 47

Emma Wilson scored 17 points and Bronwyn Mulligan gathered 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Hannah Wynn had 10 points, 6 assists and 7 rebounds to lift the No. 6 Crusaders. Nicole Tammaro added 9 points.

Championship: 

Pentucket 52, GD 41 

Hannah Wynn (16 pts, 6 assists) and Emma Wilson (10 pts) led the Crusaders in scoring. Abby Eisenklam pulled down 10 rebounds. Pentucket led 37-34 after three quarters and out-scored GD 15-7 in the fourth to pull away for the win.

Chelmsford 47, GD 41 

Chelmsford came back from a 32-16 halftime deficit to defeat Groton-Dunstable, 47-41. The Lions qualified for the post season with the win. Leading GD were Hannah Wynn (11 pts, 10 rebs), Bronwyn Mulligan (9 pts) and Emma Wilson (8 pts.). 

BOYS BASKETBALL

Clark Tournament

Semi-final: GD 51, Hudson 38

Evan Cook scored 22 points, including the 1,000th of his career, and Connor Keegan netted 12 points as the fourth-seeded Crusaders (17-4) stunned the top-seeded Hawks (19-2) to move on to the championship round.

Championship: 

Westborough 52, GD 49

Despite a game high 21 points from senior captain Evan Cook and 15 points from Connor Keegan, the Crusaders fell to No. 3 Westborough in the finals of the Clark Tournament. Earlier in the season, GD lost to the Rangers twice, 66-62 away and at home 66-53, and were hoping the third meeting would be “a charm.”

The teams were knotted 9-9 after the first quarter with GD taking a miniscule 26-23 lead at the half. But Westborough outscored the Crusaders by six in the second half and held on for the win. For the Rangers, it was their first Clark championship since 2007. 

2019 MIAA Tournament Schedule

Girls Basketball - 

Central Division 2

No. 2 seed Groton-Dunstable (15-5) has a First Round bye and will host winner of Marlborough in a Quarterfinal Round game on Thursday, February 28 at GD, 6 pm. Despite losing to the Crusaders twice this season, Marlborough, 5-3 in the league, 14-6 overall and high scoring Lucy Cappadona will have to be contained.
