Tour and Panel Discussion at Prescott School Saturday

Friends of Prescott, the local non-profit organized to "Preserve Prescott for the Community", is hosting a Saturday morning panel discussion at the Prescott School this Saturday, Feb. 6, 10 a.m.-noon. Three guest panelists from towns that have taken older buildings and converted them to community centers will be featured.

"We're looking forward to learning from the experiences of others," said Mary Jennings, Chair of Friends of Prescott, "and invite everyone to keep an open mind while they learn along with us. This is particularly true for those examining ways that senior citizens can become part of intergenerational community centers."

Two of the three speakers, Evie Duek from Berlin and Linda Vine from Lexington have led their towns to the Community Center model where senior citizens are integrated into the programming for all citizens instead of located int separated facilities.

Groton Council on Aging recently presented a proposal to Selectmen on ways to expand the Senior Center for the growing number of Groton citizens over 60 years old. The Friends of Prescott panel may help in exploration of options available to them.

A third speaker, Ellen Harde, founder of Roudenbush Center in Westford will share how early childhood and after-school programming formed the base of its programming in the 1960s. Now 50 years later, Roudenbush has expanded to become completely self-supporting.

Organizer of the event, Sharon Sullivan, hopes that everyone can take away lessons on how Prescott might develop into a multi-purpose building for profit and non-profit organizations. Tours of the building will be held 9:30-10 a.m. before the panel. This event is free of charge. Refreshments are provided by Roots Bistro.

Friends of Prescott also received Letters of Support for their CPA application to address safety and fire suppression issues at the school. Selectmen, Municipal Building Committee and Sustainability Commission each have submitted letters for the application that will be heard at a CPC Public Hearing Feb. 8.
