Recall Affidavits Circulating

The right of the people to petition their government for redress of grievances is protected under our First Amendment rights and the right to recall elected officials is outlined in the Charter's section 3-1g.

A recall election requires two steps. The first step is a so-called 'affidavit'. The affidavit requires two percent of the registered voters or, in Groton's case, 153 people to affirm that they want recall petitions to be issued. There is no deadline for gathering these signatures, however, once the affidavits are handed into the Town Clerk and the signatures on the affidavit are certified as valid, the Town Clerk issues the recall petitions, which must be returned in 45 days with signatures from 20 percent of the registered voters.

There are, currently, affidavits circulating to petition for recall elections of all five sitting selectmen. Citizens interested in signing one, some or all affidavits can find them at Clover Farm Store in West Groton square.
