Animal Control Will Return Dog To Owner - If It Is Wearing Tags

Registering your dogs provides a source of identification for them through the Groton and state tags issued on vaccination and registration. Animal Control will return a dog to its owner if it is wearing its tags. This year the $25 pick-up fee will be waived for all registered dogs. If a dog has no tags or micro-chip identification it will be taken to the town shelter and a fee will be incurred for each day there. After 10 days there, the dog will be put up for adoption if the owner is not found.

In order to register your dog it must be vaccinated against rabies. While we have had no incident of rabies in domestic animals in town, several wild animals test positive each year in Groton. Dogs and cats that are not vaccinated and are allowed to run loose can come in contact with these wild animals and if they incur a wound of unknown origin the dog or cat may be quarantined for up to 45 days.

Registration is a simple procedure: first a visit to your Veterinarian for vaccination, then a visit to our Town Clerk for the registration.
