Swallow Union Takes On Michelle Obama's Challenge

Following a challenge by First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama, students at Swallow Union Elementary in Dunstable participated in a flash mob to make awareness about active lifestyles.

#Gimme5 is part of the "Let's Move!" campaign from the First Lady's office. It celebrates the campaign's five years of promoting health active lifestyles in kids.

Students in grades one and two at Swallow Union practiced the dance routine that Mrs. Obama and TV personality Ellen DeGeneres performed on "The Ellen DeGeneres Show" on March 13. The First Lady encouraged people to learn the dance steps, record it, and share it with friends online. Students practiced for weeks during physical education special and on May 14, they surprised third and fourth grades during their recess time with a flash mob of the dance. First and second graders showed off the dance first; then the older students joined in on the dance flash mob afterwards.

"The entire project was a lot of fun!" said elementary physical education teacher Patti Starbird. "The students really got into it and it was great to see the reaction to the flash mob during the recess." Principal Peter Myerson said after the event, "Making sure the students continue to be active every day is very important. A healthy lifestyle means the kids can grow in the classroom every day."
