Sidney Leroy Carkin, Jr.
Sidney Leroy Carkin, Jr. died at his home Saturday, June 8, 2019 in Oklahoma City, OK after a long illness. He was 80 years old.
Sid was born March 26, 1939 to Charlotte Lillian Oldershaw and Sidney Leroy Carkin in Groton. He spent his childhood in Groton, and graduated from Groton High School in 1957. He served in the United States Air Force from 1961 to 1965, trained as a meteorologist.
Sid was intelligent, inquisitive, and a tinkerer with a quick wit. One of Sid’s first words as a baby was “car.” This proved to be prophetic. He worked for Fred Jones Auto Body in Oklahoma City, then as an insurance adjuster for USAA and State Farm.
His heart lived in the mountains of Colorado, where he spent summers around the campfire at the family cabin.
He is survived by his wife Donna Rae Steward Carkin; his five children: Patricia Christine Giles of Stillwater, OK; Regina Carol Cheves of Oklahoma City, OK; Michael Edwin Carkin of Oklahoma City, OK; Timothy Lee Carkin of Oklahoma City, OK; and Jason Alexander Carkin of Oklahoma City, OK; his sister Louise Sylvia Scimemi of Groton; his brother George Benjamin Carkin of Ouray, CO; and his sister Charlotte Lilian Hyden of Leominster. He leaves many nieces, nephews, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.
Sid was preceded in death by five of his siblings: Norman Richard Carkin, Alfred Leroy Carkin, Gerald Ernest Carkin, Roger Clarence Carkin, and Carole Jane DeCicco.
The family will have a private service at a later date.
