OBITUARY: Maureen (Lester) Bascom, 46
Maureen Lester Bascom, 46 of Groton, died unexpectedly Monday, August 5, 2013. She was born in Glasgow, Scotland, May 7, 1967 to Peter and Margaret (Langenscheid) Lester.
After graduating high school in Bahrain, where her father worked for the Flying Wing Bahrain Public Security, she worked as a hotel sales executive and tour guide. In 1989 she returned to Scotland and began a career with Sheraton Hotels. She worked successively for Sheraton in Edinburgh, London, San Francisco, Braintree, and Boston. In 1998 she began working for Starwood Hotels in Boston as a director of sales and marketing.
In 2006 Maureen married Bradford Bascom and they have one son Alex. The family enjoyed weekends at their Acworth, NH home where Maureen created extensive flower and vegetable gardens. She also was an outstanding cook and enjoyed crafts and scrapbooking. Maureen was very active in her son's classroom at Florence Roach Elementary School and with the local mom's group.
Maureen is survived by her husband, her six-year-old son Alexander, her father Peter Lester of Scotland, and four sisters: Mary Preston of Scotland, Linda Barr of Australia, Carol (and Sam) Grafton of Louisiana, Janice (and George) Hall of Scotland and one brother James (and Ronnie) Preston of Scotland.
The funeral service will be held at the Union Congregational Church, Main St. Groton on Saturday. Visitations will start at 9:30 a.m. and a funeral service will be at 11 a.m. with a reception downstairs in the church to follow. A private family burial will be held in Acworth, NH on Sunday.
