OBITUARY: David S. Ilsley, 100; WWII Vet

David S. Ilsley, 100, died peacefully on Saturday, March 29, 2014, surrounded by family. He was the beloved husband of Mary (Root) Ilsley, with whom he recently celebrated 64 years of devoted and loving marriage.

David was born in Thetford, Vermont, son of the late Mabel (Sargent) and Jedediah Ilsley. He grew up farming and lived an amazing 100 years.

David proudly served as a Sergeant in Europe during WW II in the United States Army.

He later worked day shift as an inspector at Fort Devens and evening shift at San-Vel Corporation as a mechanic and inspector. He also built numerous houses over the years. David taught his family a hard work ethic, honesty, patience and loyalty. He was a charming and loving soul, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew, admired, and loved him.

David was an avid gardener. He loved and raised animals; he enjoyed beekeeping and sharing the honey with friends and family. He enjoyed reading, playing checkers, and story telling. He continued mechanic work through retirement, repairing vehicles and items for family and customers alike. David continued to travel to Vermont to visit extended family throughout the years.

David was a member of the Free Mason's Temple Lodge AF&AM # 54 of South Strafford, VT, since January 10, 1948. He was also a member of the VFW Post #3291 of Pepperell.

In addition to his wife, David is survived by his son, Burton and his partner Julianne, of Pepperell; his daughter, Teresa R. Costin and her partner Charlie, of Glens Falls, NY; his son, Dwight and his wife Thelma, of Queensbury, NY; and his son, Lloyd and his wife Lorraine, of Groton. He is also survived by 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, several nephews and nieces, and many very close family friends who all adore him and will dearly miss David.

David is predeceased by his sister, Florence Bailey and his two brothers, Maynard and Bernard Ilsley.
