OBITUARIES: Lt. Colonel Edward Kopec, 91

Lt. Colonel Edward J. Kopec, 91, passed peacefully at his home on May 30, 2014 in Groton. He was born in West Groton on April 18, 1923 son of the late Frank and Frances (Zalesney) Kopec and was the husband of the late Mary (Fitzgerald) Kopec who died in 2012.

Ed grew up in West Groton and was a graduate of Groton High School. Shortly after graduation, he joined the US Army Air Force during WW 2 and served in Midland, TX as an Instructional Pilot. He served in the Air Force Reserves and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1983. He worked for the Postal Department for many years.

Mr Kopec served the Town of Groton as an Assessor for more than 10 years, a member of the Groton Fire Department for 30 years and the Commander and Past Commander of the Laurence E. Gay Post of the American Legion. He was also a member of the former Sacred Heart Church of Groton and St. James Church in West Groton. Ed loved working in his yard and the earth and loved caning seats and chairs. 

His survivors include a son David L Kopec of Westford, a daughter Joan P. MacGregor of Littleton, a brother Stanley Kopec of West Groton, a sister Helen Rooks of Westford, eight grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. He was also the father of the late Edward Kopec Jr., brother of the late Stephanie Tedesco, and grandfather of the late Andrea Kopec. 

Visiting Hours were held at the Badger Funeral Home, 45 School Street, Groton on Tuesday June 3, from 5-8 pm. A Mass of Christian Burial was held at Our Lady of Grace, worshiping at Saint James Church, St. James Ave, West Groton on Wednesday at 10 30 am. Burial will be at Groton Cemetery, Groton.
