George H. Cote, Jr.

George H. Cote, Jr., 80, of  Harvard, formerly of West Groton, passed away Friday, March 16, 2018, at Nashoba Park, Ayer. Mr. Cote was born in Ayer, March 8, 1938, the eldest of three sons born to George H. and Barbara L. (Hynes) Cote, Sr. and resided several years in West Groton before moving to Harvard 25 years ago.

As a young teen, Mr. Cote played in St. Mary’s drum and bugle corps and won an appearance on community auditions. Mr. Cote served his country from 1955-1959 as a cryptologist in the United States Naval Security Group. He continued to be a member of the Naval Cryptological Veterans Association of New England.

Over the years he enjoyed playing golf, bowling, surf fishing, hunting, baseball and hockey. He coached both youth baseball and hockey teams for Groton and even lead the 1981 Hockey team to a victory championship. 

For more than 47 years Mr. Cote worked as a paper maker at Hollingsworth & Vose Company in West Groton, retiring in 2006. He held various positions including Machine Operator, Tour Boss, Lab Technician and consultant to mills worldwide including London, England. Additionally, he was a past member of St. Mary’s Church in Ayer, St. James Church in West Groton, and a member of the Fitchburg Council of the Knights of Columbus.

He leaves his son, George A. Cote of West Groton; a daughter and son-in-law, Sharon L. and Clifford Grimm of Hudson; his wife, Ellen A. (Oliver) Cote of West Groton; two brothers and sisters in law, Frank H. and Judy Cote of Ayer, Leon A. “Barney” and Pam Cote of Newton; his long-time companion, Dorothy Pappas of Harvard; and her son, Ernest Pappas and his long-time companion, Pat Methe, of Ashby; as well as her daughter, Melissa Cunniffe of Stow; six grandchildren, Sarah Cote, Katie Cote, Cody Grimm, Austin Grimm, Danielle Cunniffe and Matthew Cunniffe.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Saturday, March 24, 2018 at St. Mary’s Church, 31 Shirley Street, Ayer. Burial will be in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are 4-7 p.m., Friday, March 23 at the Anderson Funeral Home, 25 Fitchburg Rd, (Rte. 2A) Ayer. Please see www.andersonfuneral.com for additional information.
