Station Ave. Infrastructure Improvements Will Help Realize Area's Potential as Hub For Business, Dining & Govt

With completion of the Groton Electric Light Department facility, renovations to the old Groton Fire Station, reconstruction of the adjoining parking lot and new municipal parking behind main street banks, Station Avenue is poised to realize its potential as a hub for business, dining and government in downtown Groton. To help this area reach its full potential, Selectmen want to make some infrastructure improvements to Station Ave.

Several years ago Town Meeting appropriated more than $100,000 for engineering plans and improvements on Station Ave. This was done in anticipation of applying for a State Grant for additional construction funding. Although the town spent $60,000 on these plans, the project did not qualify to receive any state funds. "This leaves between $30,000 to $40,000 for the proposed improvements." Said Town Manager Haddad.

As part of the Groton Electric Light Department construction, utilities in the area were placed underground. Selectmen are proposing that the sidewalk on Station Ave. be continued to connect with the new sidewalk installed by GELD and that a conduit be installed to place utilities underground from Main St. to the GELD building. There are also plans to pave Station Ave.

Town Manager Haddad said he believes that this is "an excellent use of the funds and will really enhance Station Ave" and the Board agreed voting to authorize the use of the remaining funds.
