Plan to Renovate Old Fire Station 'A Wonderful Addition to Station Avenue'

Attorney Bob Collins presented the latest plan for the renovation of the old Fire Station on Station Avenue to Planning Board members, and all were pleased with the design. They praised the changes made by the applicants, Dan and Lori McElroy, and their team, along with recommendations from the Design Review Committee (DRC). The Board voted to close the public hearing on this project.

The plans show an ice cream and sandwich shop on one side, and a bicycle shop on the other side of the first floor with a residential unit on the second floor.

The façade of the building will feature a series of doors and windows, defined by cornices and columns, and transoms above the windows. The door in the center will lead to the upstairs unit. Window boxes were added to the front, along with decorative panels.

Bike racks will occupy some space in front, behind benches on a small plaza. The street side will have granite curbing and a poured concrete sidewalk to match the other sidewalks.

Collins advised that the DRC wanted more specificity on the planting species which he will send to them.

Newest member Michael Vega said he liked the plan and noted the "thoughtful adjustment" from an earlier plan. Colleague Scott Wilson concurred, adding that the façade had a nice feel and suggested that the applicants consider a tree along the sidewalk to provide shade for folks sitting at the benches.

Member Russ Burke pointed out, "This fits Groton, with the signage, the wood cornices. It is a wonderful addition to Station Avenue."

Citing the presentation as a "wonderful job", Chairman George Barringer asked Land Use Director Michelle Collette to prepare a draft to vote approval at the December 11 meeting.
