NEWS: Weed Treatment for Baddacook Denied by Water Commissioners

Groton Water Commissioners voted unanimously to deny a request from residents of the Baddacook Pond area to use a chemical to eliminate weed infestation that is taking over the pond. By Town Charter, and Mass General Law, the Water Commissioners control the water rights at the pond as this is the source for Baddacook Well, the significant supply of public drinking water for Groton residents.

Baddacook Pond resident Jim Luening advised Selectmen of the vote but stressed that this pond is a recreational resource that is 45 percent infested with invasive aquatic weeds, milfoil and cabomba, and that they present a danger for drowning.

The proposal put forth by the group claims that the herbicide to be used is safe and will not migrate into the area wells. He told Selectmen that the group would be asking the Commissioners to reconsider their decision at their Tuesday, Jan. 28 meeting. However, at this meeting Commissioners upheld their original vote and denied use of a weed killer in the pond.
