Groton Police Officer Rachael Mead Chosen to Run In Boston Marathon to Aid Victims of Bombing

Rachael Mead, a three-year veteran of Groton Police Department, was chosen by OneFund, to run in this year's Boston Marathon to raise money for victims of last year's Marathon bombing.

Groton Police Chief Donald Palma praised Officer Mead saying, "It is an honor she was chosen and she has our complete support." He added, "Officer Mead will represent the Groton Police Department and the Law Enforcement community as a whole."

Officer Rachael Mead grew up in Billerica, received her undergraduate degree from UMASS Dartmouth and graduated from Suffolk University with a Master's degree in Criminal Justice. The first four years of her career were spent in Hampton, NH until she had the opportunity to move 'closer to home', joining the Groton Police Department three years ago.

Although she does not need to meet official Marathon qualifying times to run with the OneFund Team, she is, nevertheless, a dedicated long distance runner of more than 15 years, having finished two marathons, saying she loves long-distance running because it 'clears the mind'.

While serving as a patrol officer, Officer Mead also serves as 'Juvenile Liaison Officer' for the Groton Police Force, organizing events to reach out to Groton's young people, including leading the DARE program in the schools. She is one of the founders of the Police Athletic League, designed to provide opportunities for young people to have fun, exercise, and get to know police officers as human beings.

Chief Palma added that this summer Officer Mead and other officers will be organizing activities including outdoor movie nights at the Lost Lake Fire substation.

Anybody wishing to donate to the fund for victims of the Boston Marathon bombing can donate on website www.crowdrise.com/rachaelmead. So far, $275 has been raised in Rachael's name.  For all those who are able, let's give Officer Mead a boost, help the victims of the Boston Marathon bombing and make Groton proud by giving and supporting Officer Rachael Mead by donating to the fund for victims of the Marathon bombing.
