Fire Fighter Contract Approved By Select Board

by Connie Sartini
Town Manager Mark Haddad announced that the Town of Groton and the Groton Fire Fighters IAFF Local 4879 have come to agreement on the Firefighters’ contract and the Select Board approved it unanimously Monday night.
There are two provisions in the agreement: one is a change in Holiday pay from 12 hours to 24 hours as a result of the 24-hour shifts. “The only financial impact” Haddad said, “is $8,000 and this has already been included in the budget.”
Currently the Fire Department requires candidates to serve three or more years as a Lieutenant in order to apply for the vacant Captain’s position. Haddad
advised, “There are two members of the Department that are eligible, but they did not want to apply. The Union gave up some of the duties of the Captain position so that the Town can hire a Deputy Fire Chief.”
According to Haddad, the previous Captain received $107K in 2017 and $108K in 2018 and $97K for a partial year, all of which included overtime.
He added, “There would essentially be no financial change with a Deputy Chief except that the Deputy Chief does not receive overtime.”
Select Board member Becky Pine advised that “the negotiations went smoothly. A 7 x 24 Fire Department is a big step for this town.”
