Were These Attitudes and Actions ‘Small-Spirited’?

Dear Editor,

Traditionally, the Groton Democratic and Republican Town Committees have worked together to sponsor Candidates Night. Last year, the Republicans demurred, as there were no contested races and they felt that there was a better forum offered by a different format, with less expense and personnel involved.

This year the Democrats made the offer to co-sponsor Candidates Night with the Republicans, but when they learned that the Groton Republicans are currently in the process of re-organization, they withdrew that offer in view of the fact that there was no official Republican organization to be co-sponsor. This despite the fact that there were registered Groton Republican voters willing to take on both the financial and personnel duties of the Groton Republican Town Committee in co-sponsoring Candidates Night as Groton Republicans.

Were it not for the impeccably impartial credentials of the Candidates Night Moderator, Bob Gosselin, I would be concerned about the possibility of bias, with only one political party running Candidates Night during a contested election. With Bob in charge of the actual operation of Candidates Night, my fears are allayed. Nonetheless, I do feel that the attitudes and actions of the Groton Democratic Town Committee are rather small-spirited.

Candidates Night will be held on Tuesday, May 14 at 7:30 PM in the Middle School Performing Arts Center. See you there.

Sincerely yours,

Brooks Lyman

Candidate for Select Board
