Town Meeting is Obsolete

Dear Editor:

We would like to comment on the recent town meeting vote. Of the 7,500 registered voters, only 300 showed up to vote. This, in our opinion, is disgraceful. Some people left before the firehouse article came up. Why? We don't know. 222 voted for the firehouse and 58 voted 'no'.

We think the town meeting is obsolete as far as this town is concerned, and should be abolished in favor of a ballot form of government. In short, a clique showed up and spent over 8 million dollars, and yes, even bought a bridge. We think all this is needless spending at a time of worldwide economic trouble.

We think the reason so many voters don't vote is apathy and perhaps don't like being seen on TV voting one way or another. However, with TV covering so many issues along with excellent newspaper and internet coverage, the public is vey well informed of the issues of the day. We think, at one time, town meeting served the town well. Times and people change. We further can't see how a democratic government can allow 200 people, more or less, to run the town. It's making a farce out of town meeting. Think of all the money the town could save without the meeting.

We also believe the polling places should not be in schools, given the Newtown, CT crisis.

Sincerely,

Robert Stephens
