A Strong Odor Coming From The Boiler Room
Thu, 03/12/2020 - 6:22pm Heraldgroton
Dear Groton-Dunstable families,
We are writing to share information about an oil spill that occurred this morning in the first- floor boiler room at Florence- Roche Elementary School. Before going into detail, we assure you that all children are safe and there is no need to dismiss students.
This morning, there was a strong odor coming from the boiler room. The maintenance department noticed there was a leak in an oil line and a small amount of oil had been absorbed into the concrete. The team immediately called the fire department to access the situation and teachers took their classes outside to enjoy the fresh air.
At this time, the Department of Environmental Protection and the Groton Fire Department is on-site supporting clean up and air purification with our maintenance team. Additionally, we have consulted with the Groton Board of Health. In consultation with these experts, it has been determined that the second-grade hallway and cafeteria are unaffected by the smell. Therefore, the fire doors have been closed to isolate the rest of the building. Since setting up the air purifiers at 10:30 am, the threshold is reducing and smell has been reduced in half.
Students will have outdoor classes and will attend classes in the Performing Arts Center (PAC)
in middle school south. They will enter through the second- grade hallway to have lunch as scheduled. Students are enjoying time with their teachers in the beautiful weather and are enjoying the day.
We will reassess the situation hourly and the fire department will determine if and when school will be conducted as normal tomorrow. We will send out another notification by the end of the day.
If you have any questions or concerns, please send an email to Katie Novak at knovak@gdrsd. org. I will be available to answer emails and connect all day.
