A Shining Example Of Democracy in Action

In this time when our national political discourse has become so deeply polarized, and our democratic institutions have come under attack, Groton’s Town Meeting on October 3 was a shining example of democracy in action. On issues ranging from mundane to financially significant and emotionally charged, we listened respectfully to each other, we debated the merits, we crafted compromises, and we voted. Under the very capable management of Moderator Jason Kauppi, we worked efficiently to make decisions together about how our government will function, and how our tax dollars will be spent.
In addition to Moderator Kauppi, I want to offer my congratulations and thanks to Town Clerk Mike Bouchard, Town Manager Mark Haddad, Executive Assistant Dawn Dunbar, and our Department Heads for their careful planning and attention to all of the logistical details.
It is easy to poke fun at the quirky rules, or the ways that local democratic process can get side-tracked into endless debate, or, conversely, to take for granted the smooth functioning of Town Meeting and local elections. I am filled with pride and gratitude that Groton continues to do such a good job of democratic self-government. Good political process, like charity, begins at home, on the local level. Thank you, fellow citizens, for your participation!
