LETTERS: No Selectmen Should Serve on Charter Review Committee

Dear Editor,

Before anyone is appointed to a Charter Review Committee, there should be a project plan developed which would include time lines for the delivery of recommendations and a plan of action with a time line for the BOS to act on the recommendations. All recommendations by the committee that need a Town Meeting vote should go directly to an article on the Warrant. There is no need for veto power by the BOS.

There is no reason why any BOS member or most importantly the Town Manager, should serve as a voting member of the committee. Too many activities that have been questioned and the only response has been, "the new charter allows this". It would be a mistake to let the foxes count the chickens. This is not a group that has been open to change or respecting those who have challenged the wisdom of some of the actions.

The major committees could select 1 member and 4 voters who could would then be chosen at random to serve on the By-Law committee. The community needs to have a fully independent committee that has no vested interest in the existing power structure.

Sincerely,

Rule Loving
