LETTER: The Spirit of the Holidays Is Alive In Our Community

Outpouring of Assistance to Community Children's Fund

Dear Editor:

Once again the spirit of the December holidays was alive in our community as demonstrated by the outpouring of assistance given to the Community Children’s Fund.  This Fund was begun by the Commissioners of Trust Funds over twenty-five years ago to help local families in need during the December holidays with gifts and food. Because of the generosity of so many, this Fund is now available to help year-round for things like summer camp programs, summer school tuition, field trips, school supplies/clothing, etc. This year, 14 families with 34 children were helped during the December holidays.

The Commissioners of Trust Funds would like to acknowledge and thank the people who continue to participate in the joy of giving by supporting this Fund.  Some of these include:

- Anchor Collective Real Estate

-The Bored of Direkters

-First Parish Church Giving Tree

-Groton Community Foundation

- Groton Fire Department

- Groton-Pepperell Rotary

- Groton Police Department

- Our Lady of Grace Knights of Columbus

The staff from the Florence Roche School and Swallow Union Elementary Schools

The staff and students of the Groton-Dunstable Middle School who, once again, dedicated the month of December to fundraise for Project Mitten and donate all proceeds to the Community Children’s Fund. (See photo  below)

The staff and students of the Groton-Dunstable Regional High School who fundraise for their “Be An Elf” Project and then actually take lists and shop for the children on the lists.

We have several anonymous contributors each year and this year we had an increase in people who wanted to “adopt” the child’s list and shop for them.  I would like to particularly recognize the elementary school student who requested that his relatives send money to this Fund in lieu of buying him gifts for Christmas.

There are many more that need to be thanked for their annual donations who, without them, this Fund would not continue.  100% of the monies collected are used to benefit families in our community so that children should not bear the burden of a financial crisis.  If you would like to make a donation, please make it payable to Community Children’s Fund and send it to 173 Main Street, Groton, MA  01450.

If you are in need of assistance, please call me at 978-877-6787.  Confidentiality is strictly maintained.

Sincerely,

Karen F. Tuomi,
