LETTER: A Calm, Fair Voice In Challenging, Unpredictable Times

Becky Pine brings a calm and sensible voice to the Select Board during these challenging and unpredictable times. Her participation has been an important factor in the board’s recent high performance. Now, more than ever, we need to maintain that stability. We will vote for Becky, and we urge Groton Herald readers and others to do so.
     Becky held leadership roles in our church, and she served on the Groton-Dunstable School Committee for nine years. She chaired the Committee that built the first Middle School, including the then-new Performing Arts Center, so greatly needed because Groton had no large auditorium for Town Meeting. This is all very public.
     A question: what is our personal basis in asking you to vote for Becky? Well, we have known Becky as an active, involved citizen for the 40+ years that we have lived in Groton. As we became senior citizens and retirees, we began working with dozens of wonderful folks in Groton on initiatives to make Groton an even better place:
• serving on a planning committee for the new Council on Aging Center, driving for meals on wheels, and helping fund the fitness room equipment there;
• starting the Groton Neighbors non-profit organization (more than 100 members), that helps Groton residents stay in their homes and connected to our community as they age;
• helping launch and support the multi-purpose, multi- generational Prescott School Community Center, with programs, wonderful gym, rentals for profits and non-profits.
     Our answer to the question: from our long-term and recent Groton experience with many folks, Becky Pine stands out as a person who really helps get good things done in a good way for Groton. She does her homework to understand all sides of the issues, then finds a way to move forward constructively with others, with good will. Becky cares deeply about public education, the environment, and about using the tools of democracy as part of our Groton government to serve all of us fairly.
     Let’s continue the progress that the Select Board has been making. Please join us and vote to re-elect Becky Pine on June 9.
