Complaints About Town Meeting by A Very Frustrated Citizen

Dear Editor:

Last night (May 5) I attended the Groton Town Meeting, the second of two Monday nights. I had just worked 10 hours, both yesterday and last Monday (April 29) before I attended the meeting. The first meeting adjourned at 10:30 and last night I got up and left at 11 p.m. There were still five or six people waiting to speak at the microphones. In general, the meeting was well run by the Moderator, Select People, and Finance Committee, all of whom seemed very knowledgeable.

However, I had several serious concerns: I thought the topic of selling/leasing or holding on to Prescott School was an extremely important topic to be discussed and voted on. Couldn't the different articles be prioritized in terms of importance? We spent an inordinate amount of time earlier in the evening debating the need to register vehicles standing on property in view of the street. Then a matter as important as the sale of Prescott School was left until at least 11 p.m. where there were only about 145 people left in attendance to vote. My suggestion would be to prioritize the Articles and then put a time limit on how long each person could talk.

I was appalled at how several people felt it necessary to address every issue at length, and one person was actually using the microphone as an opportunity to run for Selectman. There were many committed and knowledgeable people in attendance and it took an endless amount of time to get anything done. It felt like a microcosm of the national politics of today. Where is the commitment to the "common good of all the people of Groton?" A very frustrated citizen of Groton,
